When traveling with diabetes it is very important to plan ahead. Know your destination, how long you will be gone and plan for any delays or interruptions along the way. Here are some tips to help you enjoy your trip.
- Pack extra supplies and medications in a separate bag and keep them with you at all times.
- Have enough supplies to last your full trip plus an extra few days.
- Always carry diabetes ID either a card or a bracelet.
- Get a letter from your physician with your current medical diagnoses and current medications.
- Carry extra prescriptions for medications and supplies.
- Check blood sugars regularly, every 2-4 hours.
- Try to follow your usual meal plan. Eat at least every 4-5 hours.
- Carry extra snacks and meals with you.
- Carry supplies for a low blood sugar such as glucose tablets or gel.
- Know how to get medical help at your destination before you leave.
- If you are driving, check your blood sugar before you start driving and at least every 2 hours while driving.
- If you are flying, check with the airline about managing and carrying your supplies. You may need a letter from your physician to carry your supplies on board.
- If you are crossing time zones discuss with your health care provider how to adjust your medications or insulin.
